Founded by Dr. Ernest van der Merwe, Altered Worlds is informed by more than two decades of international experience spanning creative practice, organisational leadership, higher education, and research. This includes senior leadership roles as Associate Dean, Head of Department, and Creative Director, leading multidisciplinary teams, developing strategic initiatives, and delivering projects across academic, public, and private sectors.

The practice is further strengthened by expertise in organisational development, curriculum design, hiring and onboarding systems, stakeholder engagement, and work within complex and unionised environments. This breadth of experience enables Altered Worlds to move confidently between strategic thinking, creative production, and practical implementation.

As a licensed Advanced RPAS pilot and certified Flight Reviewer, Dr. van der Merwe also brings specialist expertise in professional drone operations, aerial imaging, and flight assessment.
